THE GOLDEN NAME DAY

Lighthearted yet wistful are the days of young Nancy which she spends with her Grandmother and Grandfather Benson while her mother is in the hospital. The Bensons and their Swedish neighbors receive Nancy with open arms and Nancy in turn finds their customs increasingly fascinating, especially the one of a name day. Every day in the year has a name and a celebration is in order when one's own day comes around. This and other play-time and work time experiences with her friends, Elsa,Sigrid and Helga, put new confidence and life into Nancy, and earn her a name day of her own. Drawing by Garth Williams have their charm.
