CLEM: The Story of a Raven

A nature diary about raising an orphan raven, building an adobe house, and the birth of Dewey's daughter. Vividly told; Dewey is a careful, if sentimental observer. Entertaining episodes include Clem's attempts to learn to walk in an inebriated lope, and to fly: ""Running along, wings up, head lowered, he looks like Groucho Marx in a cape."" His food preferences are ice cream, scrambled eggs, tomatoes, and the neighbor's dog's food. Other adventures include rescuing a bull snake wounded by a thresher and raising an orphan owl. The bird drawings are lively and accurate, but the illustrations of the baby are stiff and awkward. Of interest primarily to older children who are science enthusiasts.
