THE WAR BETWEEN THE SHEETS

Social scientists could have a lot of fun with the implications of this one. Ex-political activist Jerry Rubin, aided by his commodity-broker wife, here discourses on the various sexual inadequacies of his life--chiefly impotence and premature ejaculation--and the pressures (on the male) of the women's movement; he thinks the result is a ""self-help book for the penis,"" but we think it's chiefly tripe. Of course, it isn't all Rubin on Rubin; there are quotes from 500 essays billed as ""The Male Sexual Anxiety Research Project""--which, by the way, drew more female responses than male. We learn that one woman and her husband had trouble identifying her clitoris, with catastrophic results: ""By the time he killed himself, I had become convinced I was a lousy sex partner."" Rubin and Leonard also provide such valuable insights as the assertion that men today are in a ""collective depression"" over women's multiorgasmic potential; that we have a new myth of female ""blue balls""; and that an orgasm during menstruation decreases female cramps. There are many sex manuals on the market, but we can truthfully say that there aren't many like this one: sheer bravura and bunk.
