A PENNY'S WORTH OF CHARACTER

A single morning in the life of Shan, a Kentucky country boy, teaches him a lesson in honesty in a simple narrative that shows Jesse Stuart's marked feeling for the people and the region that are his own. Shan returns paper bags to the storekeeper for a penny a piece, but he needs 10¢ too for his favorite snack and slips in a defective bag to cover the cost. On the way home the candy's not as good as he thought it would be, so he has to confess to feel better about it. Jesse Stuart's second juvenile (see The Beatinest Boy-1953) this has warm, rustic qualities.
