A book of the north woods, of wolves, of man and dog- and particularly of one dog with more than ordinary intelligence. Queenie, part husky, was suspicious of all men, even the owner of the dog sled, Link, so went back into the woods to have her puppies- and lost her life defending her pups against a wolf. Only one puppy survived, and by a devious route he eventually returns to Link- and they won mutual faith and devotion. A patterned story, but Kjelgaard writes better than most.
