YOU CAN'T STEAL FIRST BASE

Unlike some recent sports books, Jimmy Dykes memoir is mainly for ball fans and not for the general reader. Dykes' memory for players will have even devotees scratching their heads when he describes a crucial inning from the 1920's played by now obscure giants of the diamond. Jimmy himself maintains that the game has gone downhill both in verve and dedicated sportsmanship since the Twenties and that the dollar has preempted sheer love of the pennant race. When he was a player, Dykes' main base was the Philadelphia Athletics and he believes he played on the' supreme team of all time, the '29 Athletics. He maintains this against the fact that the Yankees that year had Ruth and Gehrig in their powerhouse. When kicked upstairs to managerial status, Jimmy began a long series of managing and coaching Jobs but finally wound up again in Philadelphia....This is a taped talk-book, lively but with barely a memorable event.
