by Joan Walsh-Illus. Anglund ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 26, 1964
The publisher's accompanying jacket copy hopefully suggests that Mrs. Anglund ""distilled the essence of childhood into the pages of another book to entrance both young and old."" We can only go half way with that. The old, particularly those enjoying selective memory, will find the chubby, Hummel-figured children as endearing as ever. Some are in black and white while others are in color but most are dressed in the clothing fashionable when Lord Fauntleroy was a tad and set against a clean, ordered background. Less entrancing for juvenile readers is the hushed text captioning the pictures which proceeds from the title through such stunners as, ""It begins by being born and ends with growing up,"" and ""It is a timeless place...where minutes are not numbered and the hours are sweet with happiness."" Mrs. Anglund never produced a had-looking book and booksellers are well-advised to rack this so that grandmothers won't have far to stoop.
