In question and answer format, the text addresses the reader directly in the second person; it includes sex differences that occur at puberty, basic sexual behavior, and controversial issues. Liberally illustrated with utilitarian line drawings (specific with regard to anatomy and birth-control aids; vague when depicting behavior), this book is unusual in containing a clear discussion of birth, control issues and methods--information not readily found elsewhere on the preteen level. Both sides of the issue of abortion are presented dispassionately; a section entitled ""Taking Care of Yourself"" discusses sexual abuse and the STDs, including AIDS. A final chapter sums up the basic message: ""The most important thing to know about sex as you grow up is to respect yourself and others."" Reassuring and informative, the book answers the important questions children in this age group have about sex, concentrating on information rather than advocacy. As the most complete book available on this level, it should be invaluable.
