This is the first picture story book by this well known author-illustrator beam, whose Dugan and the Hobe and Mighty Mo are old favorites, among their others. Punch is a Shetland pony. His experience with his first pair of shoes should strike a responsive chord in the nursery school set. After yearning for the shoes, dying to hear himself make clip-clopping noises, etc., Punch finds his new shoes bit of a drag until he gets used to them -- like children who finally get their two-wheeled bikes and skates and find they have to learn how to use them with unconscious ease. His barnyard companions include a goose and a goat as well as his mother. The animals are distinctly characterized in both the text and the action filled drawings.
