MINDBRIDGE

Jacque Lefavre, a difficult but likable rookie on a training crew of planet ""tamers,"" becomes the first surviving discoverer of a strange telepathy-inducing organism. Jacque and the ""mindbridge"" are drafted into an attempt to establish communication with a newly discovered, apparently threatening alien civilization. The result makes Jacque the prototype of a new evolutionary direction which will open the stars to mankind. Do the artfully interpolated flashbacks and mission schedules and data reports really add much to the narrative? Hard to say, but few sf writers manage the modish collage form with more fluency and brio than Haldeman.
