MID-ICE

The Wegener Expedition to Greenland -- paralleling in time, the period covered in Chapman's Northern Lights (Oxford). A scientific research party under the German scientist, Wegener, pulls through a long, dreary time, separated from their leader -- first Georgi, alone, later joined by Sorge and Loewe, whose frozen toes they had to amputate. Spring brings news of Wegener's disappearance -- later his death, bad preparation for further months alone. The story is told in diaries and letters to his wife, a very human report of a year in the ice fields, of the undue importance of minor happenings. Sell to those who liked Northern Lights and the Byrd books. Men especially.
