Here are seven times seven meditations on Jesus' seven last words on the cross, given by the Rev. John Alexander McElroy over a period of ten years of Lenten Fridays at the Arch St. Methodist Church in Philadelphia. Each series of seven, arranged for daily Lenten reading takes the seven last words as text, but each has a common theme which each meditation illustrates and develops, such as the Lord's Prayer, or The Beatitudes. They are all relevant to modern life, and thus useful for day-to-day living. Their style is vivid, and the illustrations graphic. For daily Lenten reading, a welcome addition; for Protestant preachers who also preach on the seven last words of Christ every year, fresh help and fruitful suggestions.
