The title describes the lift of a jet airliner's take off and this long essay (short book) on flight has a handful of bright insights and some quietly ironic character portrayal. But for the most part it is rather uninspired, perhaps because a jet flight is actually a fairly tedious procedure. Bainbridge offers all sorts of technical tidbits (on plane structure, fuels, weather readings) and retails them through the mouth of a Captain Harold Blackburn. Blackburn is not the sophisticated man Bainbridge needs to function in high style, and although this article appeared originally in The New Yorker, it might just as well have gone to Mechanix.
