A medioore, popularized biography of Lewis and Clark, primarily this consists of the story of the hazards and adventure of the exploration of the Louisiana Territory and the Pacific Northwest. The author fills in the bare outline of their lives. Virgi youth and heritage, friendship with Jefferson, early army career fighting Indians -- and then goes on to record in detail the Lewis and Clark expedition. Here are the discoveries in botany, animal and Indian lore, geography, their fight for survival, the long, hard journey back. Much of the material is taken from the Journals and diaries of the men -- this is also the story of the individual members of the expedition, and of Saca, the faithful Indian woman guide. Reliable but pedestrian; well-documented.
