Virgil Tibbs, ever-noble black detective on the Pasadena police force, becomes a live-in bodyguard for Miriam Motamboru and her two children, family of the president of a third-world country embroiled in political chaos. And Tibbs' efforts to avoid falling in love with Miriam (who is also a paragon, but of womanly virtues) are interwoven with his normal police duties--like trying to find the self-appointed vigilante who is killing off known criminals let free by loopholes or lenient judges. Veteran Ball holds--without ever gripping--the reader's attention with his best line of solid plotting. But his stolid prose and unreal dialogue (when noble Virgil and noble Miriam converse, it's snooze city) will be a turnoff for all except ardent fans of the police procedural.
