Seven little rabbits/ Walkin' down the road/ Walkin' down the road/ Seven little rabbits/ Walkin' down the road/ To call on old friend toad."" Continuing and compounding the repetition, each rabbit in turn grows tired on the road so that not once but seven times the party ""Turned around/ Until they found/ Down in the ground/ A hole/ Built by a mole"" where each in turn is tucked into bed to dream of ""Seven little rabbits/ Walkin' down the road. . . ."" The cyclical implications of the ending are frightening, and at least a little variation in the cause of each rabbit's turning around might have helped keep grownups awake, though with Barbara Cooney's cozy mole hole, bonneted bunnies and flowery borders it could serve for a pleasantly soporific bedtime recital.
