The fifth in a sure selling series, this is likely to be even more successful than its predecessors since this form of poetry has an especial timelessness and universality. The poems here are arranged in a chronology of emotion, from the first awareness of love to the focus on one person, the urgency and the consummation of love, the pain of parting, renunciation, and death. There are some love songs- as well as some lighter poems (Ogden Nash), and the range of selection is widely inclusive from Donne, Herrick, Shakespeare, Burns, and Cummings (whom Holmes considers the finest in this field), and also Blake, Marlowe, the Brownings, Byron, Shelley, Emily Dickinson, Rossetti, Keats, Tennyson, Wordsworth, down to the more modern Millay, Spender, Pound, MacNeice (this only a partial indication of the representation here). This volume will have pen and ink drawings by Johann Troyer, and the de luxe Gift Edition will have a double buckram binding, gold top, decorative slip case and a cellophane wrap.
