by John--Ed. Mariani ‧ RELEASE DATE: May 20, 1986
An American Michelin, featuring some 1,500 restaurants in over 40 cities nationwide. Compiled by Mariani, author of Eating Out and The Dictionary of American Food and Drink as well as articles on dining out and gastronomy for such periodicals as Saturday Review, McCalls, Esquire, and Playboy, each city is covered by a respected local critic. This is a gourmet-to-deli tour, the purpose of which is to provide the traveler with a quick reference to whatever type of cooking strikes his fancy at the moment. Each city's listing is prefaced by an index which is broken down not merely by ethnicity, but by such headings as ""Open Late,"" ""Panorama,"" ""Hotel Dining Room,"" or ""Eclectic. ""Individual listings are brief (usually only one paragraph), and they conclude with the average price per person for a three-course meal with dessert (not including cocktails and tips). Sensibly, most tourist traps, such as Anthony's Pier Four in Boston or Luchow's in New York, go unlisted. One can, of course, always quibble about omissions, but overall Mariani has done a fine job which offers something for every palate in any major city. Should become a part of every businessman's or vacationer's travel pack.
