BARRY'S BOYS

Navy lore in the form of Captain Mark Bowen's reminiscences of his days in the first Continental Navy as a midshipman under the command of John Barry. Bowen of the ""Constitution"" has just landed in Sicily in 1803 and heard of Barry's death when he starts to think about the past. Memories take him aboard the ""Lexington"" in 1776 and into Revolutionary War duty both off shore and inland-fighting British frigates, spying for Tory positions, a triumphal sailing to and from Europe on the ""Alliance"" and a greeting on return from John Paul Jones, and subsequently, to the post war years that saw the young navy's temporary decline. There are some pretty exciting passages and Mark works out a personal loyalty problem with a fellow midshipman, but for all its nautical lore and happy hero hours it won't strike many who aren't already keen on the Navy.
