Father Damien has always been a fascinating subject and here is his biography, written by a man who knows the South Sons and who has studied first hand material dealing with his early life in Belgium and his years among the lepers in Molekat. He sacrificed his life to further the comfort of his people, to build up some sort of community, to supply spiritual solace to those in need. He contracted the disease and died there. It is a thoughtful and unsensational piece of work -- not inspired, nor yet inspiring -- but thoroughly interesting. The market is much wider than the Catholic market which might be indicated.
