EUROPE ON A SATURDAY NIGHT

The tireless State-of-Mainer hits Europe, and this is it, he's done it and doesn't intend, dagnabbit, to go agin. It was a grand jaunt--through Germany, France, England, Scotland, Denmark, Italy--but Mr. Gould and his wife Dorothy will settle for an ""old age with happy memories."" Europe with Mr. Gould is not immediate transport to different cultures, but rather a series of amusing slides of Gould coping, waxing gracious and spreading a certain amount of righteous neighborly cheer. Dutifully he will occasionally make an observation on the natural phenomena; the British are ""in a funk""; Italy is dirty; the French countryside is a beautiful surprise; etc. Presumably Germany is clean, beautiful and un-funked, and Mr. Gould seemed to feel more at home there. Scenic views, food, scraps of camaraderie, bursts of fun and a song--the Goulds had a fine time, and a collection of memories, if not acculturation. Mr. Gould scorns and rails against the noisy, super-patriotic American who pontificates abroad and his own manners were no doubt impeccable. Billygoat gruff crosses the Atlantic. For the following.
