by John Gregory Dunne ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 17, 1969
The Studio is Twentieth Century Fox followed here for a year from memo to motion spectacular--the cast includes everyone from the Zanucks to Cher of ""Sonny and Cher"" and if anyone has ever wondered what the non-Hollywood version of the mega-industry is like, this is it. The major flicks being created in this time-span are The Star, Dr. Dolittle and Planet of the Apes and fantasy seems to have it with one director hoping never to have to take down another TV antenna, a commissary featuring a Valley of the Dolls special, and characters saying things like ""Are we shooting the Planet of the Apes at the ranch this weekend?"" Certain stars will hardly be pleased by the casual references to them while fuses blow on the set and in the box office. Production costs are staggering (ever wonder how much it costs to take a display in Sam Goody's window?) and probably the best summary of the atmosphere would be intensified tedium. But all of this generates an inherent excitement for the reader and Mr. Dunne has done his best to keep it coherent through a labyrinth of detail and prime time expose.
