by John Harris ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 1, 1967
This is a suspenseful, at times superbly developed trial novel that alternates between what witnesses say and then recreations of the truth, a scheme something like that of Rashomon but in a British court... It is now 1939 and a legendary British general, who is famed for a great cavalry action against the Red Russians in 1919, is being mentioned as Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force against Hitler. When a major who was at the old battle decides to air its realities in public, the general brings him to court for libel. Well, it had been the world's last great cavalry action...or had it? As the story unfolds, reputations are smashed and the realities of the great battle are made bitterly plain. However, much of the novel's force is in its epic descriptions of British and Russian evacuees trekking in a human avalanche toward a port city for evacuation; the evocation of a typhus epidemic and the Russian winter. A gripper!
