TALESTER THE LIZARD

Talester the lizard lived in a curled-up leaf that hung over a small pond. Like most lizards, he didn't like the water, but Talester lived there for a special reason""--a friend who lives in a curled-up leaf just below him and who, readers soon realize, is nothing but Talester's reflection. When, ""one hot dry summer,"" Talester's friend starts moving farther and farther away and then disappears, readers will know too that Talester's search for him will be in vain. One might hope that Talester would run into some real lizards and make a new friend, but what happens here is that rain drives him back home to his leaf and, by refilling the pond, brings the friend back below him. This is a letdown, in terms of both plot and psychology; but Himmelman's drawings of comical, skinny Talester give the quest a bright, sprightly look.
