The head-on collision of the European virus and collegiate culture may be seen in the relationships of Pearse, Greg and Ida, a trio whose friendship in Europe had been broken by Pearse's unheralded marriage. His equally unheralded divorce brings him back to New England to seek out the other two, -- Greg and his combination of athleticism and scholarship, Ida and her English outlook and love for Greg. Pearse with barbs for everything continues his evil guardian-angel attitude towards Greg, stirs up small college town contretemps and faces his own instrumentality in Greg's suicide, while Ida is carrying Greg's child. Invidious to vicious character and conversation piece, this is weighted against wide popularity by its dependence on erudition, quotation, heavily charged late 1930 atmosphere. A first novel, displaying a wide range of possibilities for the author's future -- if a narrow field of reality in the present.
