A nostalgic re-creation of the Scotch-Canadian community around Lake Erie that the world-renowned economist knew as a boy. The style is graceful, wry and pigrammatic, e.g. (speaking of the famous ancestral trait) ""...the love of money meant that a man's emotions were reliably engaged until the day he died."" These scrapbook essays touch on husbandry, the Toronto Globe, the social and religious diosyncracies of the various clans and the home front during WWI. There is a complete portrait of the high school principal, Old Tommy, a disciplinarian of the underhead variety. While adult readers may concur with our adult report which says that the charm is simply not enough, these are the most literate recollection of adolescence to appear in some time and they are amusingly set out.
