Here's a novel in the French manner, good, solid reading, and -- for the most part -- interesting. But oh so long a time it takes to spin a somewhat slender story. The setting is Switzerland -- the story follows the devious paths leading to a brutal but somehow inevitable murder, and the effects of the crime on those who took part in it. The sombreness of the main plot is relieved by a tender love story. There is a certain power and distinction that makes this a book that should be seriously considered, but the market is questionable. Possibly, those who liked Mazeline's Wolves will find this to their taste. Buy carefully. Publishers rate it high and plan sales promotion and advertising.
