The timeliness of this volume is apparent. It affords the general reader an opportunity of obtaining information on the historical background material that is indispensable for a real appreciation of the character and significance of a general or Ecumenical Council at a time when the Catholic Church is anticipating the twenty-first such Council in its long history. The story of each of the preceding twenty Councils, from that of Nicea in 325 to the Vatican Council in 1869, is set forth here competently, clearly, interestingly, objectively, and with sufficient detail to satisfy the generally educated but not the specialized scholarly reader. The divine and human elements entering into the fabric of any Ecumenical Council are clearly distinguished and effectively synthesized in each case. In a sense, a bird's-eye view of the whole history of the Church can be obtained from a perusal of this work.
