by John Masefield ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 20, 1936
A totally unexpected book from Masefield, and a disappointing one. It's an inland story, and practically the whole thing revolves around a long-drawn-out trial of two men, one a half wit, accused of shooting and killing a keeper while poaching. The central character is a baker, who is losing prestige and business because of Socialistic activities, and who champions their cause with dire results to himself. Is it indended on a spoof on the law, or a serious commentary on problems of justice?
