That ghoulish gorilla on the jacket is covering fifteen one-page chapters on man's evolution from ancestral Primates to Homo sapiens. In entirely non-technical read-aloud style they tell of Darwin, mutation, and natural selection; of monkeys and apes and Olduvai men; of foragers, hunters, then modern crop-growers; and culminate in a difficult and little-related family tree. The text is informative though rather too conversational, offering the basics in an everyday frame of reference so that the child can deal with them by himself. But the conventional cave-man and TV-ape drawings are only good for laughs--which renders them inappropriately distracting and considerably devalues the book.
