IRON DUKE

One of the best modern college stories I have read. The central character is a real type -- a high school hero from the west up against the formalities and varying codes of the preparatory school boys in the freshman class at Harvard. He takes some hard knocks, losing out more often than he wins, but gradually finding that his own slant is not all right, and that he has to remake his own sense of values. There's some originality in the handling of games -- track plays an important part -- but the sound psychology of the boy character makes it a distinctive book.
