A few unusual twists to the familiar story of the sheepkiller dog, makes an appealing boy and dog yarn. Abandoned by the city couple who had raised him, the ""big mutt"", loose in the frozen Badlands of North Dakota, soon learns to survive by killing sheep, and it is not long before the sheep-herding community is alerted to destroy the dog. However, Dwight Jerome, fifteen-year-old son of a sheepman, could not bear to see the big dog run into a trap and killed, and it is Dwight's determination and patience which reclaim the dog for domestication and sheep herding. A wolf and dog hunt, and the everyday pitfalls of sheep raising add interest and excitement to a sound dog story.
