This latest of Goodall's wordless picture stories follows a doll, a toy bear and a mouse into a painting above the nursery shelf. Via a rowboat that is in the picture and later a gypsy-type wagon that is not, they come to a carnival scene where the mouse is captured by a performing cat but rescued by her friends who escape by running through the countryside and finally out of the picture -- returning by 12:15 a.m. to sleep on their shelf. But Goodall's practice of alternating full and half-size pages, which set off the kinetic mischief in Jocko (1972), is just a gimmick here, and it's hard to care at all about the fate of this dainty mouse in pink frills and her fuzzy-soft and all-too-doll-faced companions.
