BLOOD CRIES

Weisman's third (Evidence, 1980; Watchdogs, 1983) is an intelligent if slightly sluggish thriller about an American reporter who discovers a Jewish terror group operating against Arabs in Israel. Jared Paul Gordon is Jerusalem Bureau Chief for the slick newsmagazine World Week, and loves every minute of it. He's Jewish himself (from California) but never really understood his religion until he came to Israel--and living with the beautiful Adrian Cooper (daughter of a powerful American banker and supporter of Israel) makes him feel even more at home. But problems arise when he learns from an Israeli intelligence source that rightist Jewish fanatics (calling themselves TNT) are behind a series of bloody terrorist attacks on Arabs. When he tries to report the story, he's censored by Menahem Begin himself (this is 1982) and called on the carpet back home by his superior at World Week, the unctuous hypocrite Roger Richards. Undaunted, Jared digs deeper and discovers the shocking truth: not only is the Israeli government giving at least tacit support to TNT, but the terrorist group is being funded through Adrian's father's bank. Jared finally causes such a fuss that TNT members are indeed arrested; however, he's Fried by Richards and loses all journalistic standing in Israel. Nonetheless, he and the now-pregnant Adrian decide to stay on and fight for the country they believe in. Long on rhetoric and short on action, at times, but Weisman knows his Israel in convincing detail. A thought-provoking thriller, well above the standard.
