THE COUNTRY OF MARRIAGE

The author of The Sundowners here brings his dual awareness of two countries- Australia and England- into sharp conflict in an unusually holding story of a marriage. Adam and Belle Nash were extraordinarily happy; they had three very satisfactory children; they felt that nothing could shake their mutual devotion and understanding. But Belle was an Australian- and when her parents, after seventeen years' separation during her marriage to Adam, came to England for a long visit, unexpected and long submerged loyalties came to the fore. And Adam, who never for a moment questioned the depth of his devotion to his native England, found that he was forced into a decision that almost destroyed all he had put first in his marriage. The story is told not in the vacuum of the issues and the immediate personalities, but against a credible background of business identification (Adam was a somewhat underpaid junior officer in the Bank of England), of community associations, of neighbors whose own marriages afforded sharp contrasts. Here is a poignant family story, told on several levels of comprehension and compassion.
