THE GOOF THAT WON THE PENNANT

The Goof That Won the Pennant is no more than a Little. League replay of Fred Merkle's infamous flub in the 1908 Cubs-Giants pennant clincher. Otherwise, this saga of a flakey team turned into champions by a fatherly coach who wrestles with his own doubts about whether winning is a good thing sounds like a slightly jazzier version of Matt Christopher. Not much, though historians of the game will enjoy the last inning twist.
