by Jonathan Routh ‧ RELEASE DATE: Feb. 26, 1973
We found Routh's The Nuns Go to Africa (1972) marginally coy and the pictures proficiently scenic if unoriginal; here coyness takes over and even the facile proficiency is absent from these fiat faceless nuns against blue and green backgrounds made of rubbings, drips and splotches. Even if the association of nuns and penguins is not seen as a cliche by three year-olds, Routh does nothing with the notion except to introduce one talking penguin to explain that his friends (mistaken for fellow nuns by the visiting sisters) are really of another order altogether, then set both groups to romping on circus equipment that arrives on the island with the penguins after a shipwreck. In the end everyone leaves together on a homemade raft, the nuns already chattering about next year's vacation. . . to our dismay.
