ENTHUSIASM AND DIVINE MADNESS

th the Phaedrus, scholars usually lose themselves over dates (was it rly or late Plato?), subject (is it about rhetoric, Eros or communitas?), or simply fudge on the homoerotic parts. Germany's Josef Pieper, in his intriguing and intelligent essay, is more direct. It is mature Plato, the theme is the higher and lower forms of Love (later metamorphosed as ""divine madness""), and the illustrative setting is boy-meets-boy Athens. In the dialogue Phaedrus is smitten with the Sophist notion of giving oneself to an unloving lover, a ""modernist"" view.
