DEATH CLAIMS

Hansen's sleuth, David Brandstetter, a homosexual who made his first appearance in Fadeout (1970), is something new to ponder in the genre. Here as an insurance-claims man he glides in on a murder of a supposedly drowned man and uncovers a morphine racket, blackmail maneuvers, odd couplings and a case of unrequited love among the victim's wife, son (and heir), partner, ""friends,"" mistress and an ever-so-rugged Western movie star. Ledger-neat and terse as a closing in spite of the interchanges between consenting adults.
