Again a very decorative elaboration of devious to deadly pursuits, which with a precise and appreciative sense of period and place tells the story of a charmer and the woman he corrupted and abandoned. Mrs. Sacret, poor and plain widow of a missionary, asked to stay as companion to a former friend, Susan Rue, because of the knowledge of Susan's past she possesses, quickly learns to enjoy the worldliness of her new life with Susan. She receives more and more material rewards for her tacit blackmail. She falls in love with Mark Bellis, acknowledged adventurer, and is directed by him to the murderer of Susan's husband, gets the money he wants and is then abandoned and left to face the consequences of Susan's remorse and suicide, and of her own misdeed when eventually she is incriminated and trapped...Again a mystery novel with atmospheric amplification and elegance of execution. Check Shearing fans.
