THE ADVENTURES OF SPIDER

Spider is the engaging comic hero of these effectively retold West African folk tales. In each of his six adventures here, he sets out with total confidence in his own superior intelligence only to be hoist each time on his own petard. Greed seems to be his major foible. In the first story, ""How Spider Got a Thin Waist,"" he has two ropes attached to his middle leading to opposite villages, both holding feasts he wants to attend. A tug on either rope will tell him which to descend on first. When both started at once, the opposing tugs left him forever pinch waisted. He got his bald head by hiding a gluttonous portion of boiling beans under his hat and the world got its wisdom when Spider dropped a box full of it which he had planned to hoard for himself. Cleverly set down for telling and listening enjoyment with equally clever illustrations in bold color by Jerry Pinkney.
