LIVING WITH A PARENT WHO DRINKS TOO MUCH

Seixas, who offered premature counsel in the easy reader Alcohol (1977), now advises slightly older children on living with an alcoholic parent. Twenty million American children have to, Seixas reports, and she seems to know about the problems they must deal with--inconsistency, broken promises, embarrassment, possible physical or sexual abuse from the alcoholic parent; meanness or absence from the other--and some of the feelings they engender. (These include jealousy of AA over a recovering parent.) Seixas' suggested solutions are often too glib (Money problems? ""Why not earn some?"" On bringing friends home, just say your mother is ""sick""); and even her recommendation of Alateen in a nine-to-eleven level book reflects her willingness to settle for too-easy answers. Still the""you are not alone; you are not to blame"" message comes through.
