by Judith Vigna ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 1, 1988
The title says it all: Lisa's Dad makes her a fine sled for Christmas and promises to take her sledding ""right after breakfast,"" but she isn't surprised when he drinks too much beer to be able to keep his promise. Mommy has invited Mrs. Field, a new friend she met ""at a meeting for people who have a lot of drinking in their family,"" to Christmas dinner; now, she and Lisa wrap the turkey up to transport to Mrs. Field's house, where they at least have a companionable time and a chance to discuss their troubles. In the end, Lisa is doing her best to understand that Daddy does love her, as he says, and not to mind his behavior. This best-case sample of a frequent scenario will be helpful to professionals working with young children who have alcoholism in the family. Vigna's line-and-wash illustrations are adept and compassionate.
