THE MAN WHO LOST HIS WIFE

Gilbert Welton, an English publisher, finds that his younger wife Virginia has changed -- more than her perfume -- before she disappears, perhaps with his partner, the speciously charming, continental Max? The story proceeds in as uncertain and unsettled a fashion to follow Gilbert as he follows Virginia to Yugoslavia where all kinds of precarious experiences (a romance; a murder -- Max's) return him to the phlegmatic comfort of wedded life. Faintly saturnine, quite amusing and thoroughly disconcerting.
