TOURIST TRAP

A third adventure for feisty but fragile San Francisco lawyer-sleuth Rebecca Schwartz (Death Turns a Trick), now less shrill and slowly mellowing. She and newsman beau Rob Burns come upon the first tourist victim of Leslie Mathison, a killer with a pathological but understandable hatred of San Francisco. His derelict, alcoholic girlfriend, Miranda Waring, is on the scene but escapes. Then the next attack is mass food-poisoning, in a famous tourist restaurant, and there's a well-planned frame leading police to Leu Zimbardo, a just-out-of-jail drifter who becomes Rebecca's client. Vindictive attacks on tourist spots continue, and The Trapper, as he dubs himself, keeps calling Rob to claim the credit. The cops--in the person of pig-headed Lieut. Martinez--pay no mind. By the time Lou's murder trial begins, Rebecca, with her father-lawyer lending a hand, despairs of getting her client off. . .until some tense last-minute developments change the flow of events. Warmth, wit and local color in a fast-moving story--with some neat twists and turns along the way. Smith's best work so far.
