An unprepossessing yarn about a lone egg, left behind when the other chicks break out and go off with their mother, which is inadvertently hatched by a napping tigress. No sentimental Horton, the tiger decides to raise and coddle her chick until it grows big enough to make a fine meal--but just in time the chick, now a splendid rooster, crows to warn the sleeping tiger of an approaching snake, and so is spared to crow in future for the whole forest. For an audience too young to mind the stock solution, Kepes' rough cartoons are blatantly accessible--and she works in all sorts of barnyard and forest animals to identify en route.
