An old timer's portrait of his life and his times, through the men who contributed ideas and made changes for the general good. Lawyer Cohen tells of fifty years of legal and political experiences, much of which is deadwood today. Here is the work which involved him in the labor movement -- the garment industry particularly; in municipal politics in New York, and improvements involving the Port of New York Authority. Here are some of the idea-makers with whom he was associated:- Deming, who fought for local self government; Felix Adler and Ethical Culture; Damrosch and music for the people; Theodore Roosevelt, Al Smith, Louis Brandeis, most famous of a long list of personalities presented. Compare this autobiography with the Brandeis biography reviewed on P. 314, this issue, to see how comparable period and comparable backgrounds can be poles apart in handling. This seems -- in contrast- dull as well as dated.
