INNS AND OUTS

With the success of such books as Frank Case's Tales Of A Wayward Inn and Bemelmans' Life Class as standards, any book showing the inside picture of this business of feeding New Yorkers has something to aim for. This is rather good entertainment -- and is, in a way, a better personal adventure story. Keller came over from Switzerland in 1880. He hit the Fleishman bread line before his luck changed, and that gave him his idea for going into the business of food. From beaneries to cheap hotels, then on up the line to Delmonicos, Sherrys, Maxims -- and now Canoe-place Inn, a diversified story from the inside looking out, the tricks of the trade and its fascination. Good human interest appeal.
