What is bothering fourth grader Wakefield through most of his Christmas vacation is how to replace the $24.67 fish tank funds entrusted to him by his class but foolishly ""borrowed"" to buy a Geronimo 300 fly rod for himself. When his grandmother and uncle send gifts instead of the usual checks he becomes preoccupied with how to earn the money, but when shoveling snow and selling Christmas trees don't bring in enough he gladly makes it up by pawning the $24.95 fly rod for five dollars. Meanwhile the playroom Christmas tree has been stolen and the culprit revealed to be not Mad Dog the bully as suspected but motherless Tag-Along Toomey, who is then warmly admitted to the family celebration just as Wakefield has been forgiven for his temporary folly. Another easy, two-dimensional demonstration of choice and consequences and growth in judgment, with the lesson dressed up and dramatized by the uncertainties of Wakefield's financial juggling and the minimystery of the missing tree.
