SHADOW OF A DOUBT

A lesser case for stolid, capable Inspector Rudd--starting with the disappearance of alcoholic Clare Jordan, whose doctor-husband Howard owns a psychiatric clinic (started with Clare's money) and prefers the company of clinic housekeeper Eunice or crisp, blond secretary/mistress Janet. And, though Howard claims that Clare was alive up in london when last seen, Janet is soon found bludgeoned to death in the clinic's garage; furthermore, Eunice appears bruised and shaken by an intruder's attack. So Rudd begins a painstaking review of the events preceding the disappearance, talking to--among others--Clare's chic, impersonal sister Rose; cold, hostile Dr. Hannah Kerr; and the clinic patients. Strong setting, rather weak on motivation and plotting: okay for Thomson's fans--but slightly soporific for others.
